"Both a Culmination and a Beginning"

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) Chairman Jordan Levy joined with members of the ECHDC Board of Directors, Congressman Brian Higgins, Erie County Executive Chris Collins and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown to greet the Queen City Water Ferry as it launched from the Commercial Slip on Buffalo’s Inner Harbor last Thursday May 19. The service is the first of its kind for Western New York and will connect the Inner Harbor, Buffalo River and Outer Harbor.

“The Queen City Water Ferry is both a culmination and a beginning,” said Levy. “A water taxi has been talked about in Western New York for decades and was one of the top items requested during the public outreach sessions that ECHDC held over this past winter. We can finally say that we’re done talking – it is here and ready to start taking passengers. More importantly, I believe that this service, by opening up the entirety of our waterfront, will allow our community to get a true sense of the tremendous assets that we enjoy in Western New York and to appreciate the advantages and opportunities that our waterfront holds.” READ MORE...

Mission: Reform

A group of Buffalo Public School Parents, organized as the District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC), issued a call to action to boycott the Buffalo Public Schools on May 16th, 2011, in an effort to demand an emergency intervention to address the 25% graduation rates for black male students, 13 state-designated failing schools, and low academic achievement across the board for most minority students. The parent group kept their children home on a half-day of school and organized a rally in front of City Hall to call attention to the educational crisis of the Buffalo Public Schools and demand that the elected leaders of Buffalo and New York State take responsibility and initiative to address the crisis. Creating a Hockey Culture

HOW HOCKEY BECAME AN INTEGRAL PART OF BUFFALO LIFE & CULTURE

By Paul Wieland

Photos by Matt Brown

In the decade after World War II, those U. S. citizens who played hockey in Western New York would have fit into the seats of a pair of school buses, with plenty of room for referees and linesmen. There were but two hockey rinks in the entire region, one at Memorial Auditorium and the other at the private Nichols School. If a kid growing up was to learn how to play hockey, by and large he had to do it on natural ice in winter. READ MORE...

Fashion: Buffalo Style

BUFFALO STYLE

Buffalo artists are turning their love of Buffalo and cool fashionable t-shirts into a trendy local business.

When Buffalo Princess founder Marinette Kozlow went shopping for baby clothes that represented Buffalo she came out short of satisfied. “I was disappointed at my lack of options. Most, if not all, of the Buffalo art was masculine. Last fall, I started designing greeting cards in a feminine, juvenile style. A local store owner suggested I make a Buffalo in that same style. It all clicked. I immediately jumped on it and Buffalo Princess (and Prince) was born,” explained Kozlow who now offers her clothing at numerous shops around the area including, Spoiled Rotten, Cat’s Meow, and Bay-6, among others. The clothing line has since grown from girl designs to boys to men and women’s designs. READ MORE...

Buffalo Winter Fest This Weekend

If there's any city that should be celebrating its dynamic winters, it should be Buffalo. for several years, until the Labatt Pond Hockey Tournament and Powder Keg Festival, that was not the case.
