DO GOOD: Run for Water
Let them LOL (Let Them Laugh Out Loud), a Buffalo based humanitarian organization has organized a 5k/1 mile run to provide clean water to struggling communities in Sierra Leone, Africa. Accoring to Let them LOL's research, 40 billion hours per year are spent walking to find water by the people of Sierra Leone and the majority of the water is not safe for drinking, yet they have no choice. So in response every $5 dollars raised provides clean water access to one person and every $5,000 provides finances for one well to be dug. As of yesterday, 250 people are registered for the first of its kind event in Western New York and $10,000 has been raised with 100% of the proceeds going straight to Sierra Leone.
In THRiVE's January/February feature of Let them LOL, co-founder Kate Vicanti told us, "Over 1 billion people in the world have no access to safe drinking water, 3.5 million people die every year from water-related illnesses, and everyday 4,000 children die as a result of dirty drinking water. I must say it again that, our goal is to educate, empower, and increase awareness among people so that they can act." Read the full article here,
Let them LOL will also be at Darien Lake this summer featuring their Justice Experience walk through highlighting injustices in the world like modern day slavery, unjust suffering and more during Kingdom Bound 2011.
The run starts at 10:00AM sharp at the Northtown Center in Amherst (1650 Amherst Manor Drive). It's not too late to register on thier website.
