The Skiing Must Go On

Despite the vast fluctuations in winter weather this year, Holiday Valley, with fifty-eight slopes and 13 lifts (including three high speed quads) says the skiing must not stop. The resort is reporting a 14 to 51 inch base depth.  More than 45 slopes will be open this weekend and Holiday Valley will operate all 13 of its lifts including three high speed quads, eight quads and two surface lifts.

Over the past 10 years Holiday Valley has invested more than $3.3 million in snowmaking expansions and upgrades.  Spruce Lake was built in 2006 which created a 62 million gallon snowmaking reservoir at the top of the mountain.  Underground pipes that carry water throughout the resort have been replaced with larger diameter pipes to increase the snowmaking capacity.  Each year new snowmaking guns have been added to increase coverage.

Hungerhunt.com Back for 4th Year In A  Row

Every year for the past four years Buffalo City Mission in conjunction with technology partners Noobis launches their campaign to raise funds to continue ministering to the poor and homeless. Since February is one of the coldest winter months in WNY there is no better time to do it.   Because of that—this is also the time when many families in our area must make heartbreaking choices between rent costs, heating bill and feeding their families.  Locals are encouraged to join and help "Stamp OUt Hunger" through hungerhunt.com.

Did you know that, according to the Homeless Alliance of Western New York, 58% of the homeless population experienced homelessness for the first time?  Or that almost 20-percent of the homeless population consists of children and 39-percent of those children are younger than age 5!

This highly interactive experience lasts the entire month of February and is sure to uncover many facts about homelessness that you never knew.
