Mayor Brown's Summer Reading Challenge Announcement

Summer Reading Rules

April-1-2011 —  Mayor Brown released the following statement regarding this summer's reading challenge. "I am proud to announce that once again this summer I will be sponsoring my 10th Annual Reading Rules! Kids Summer Reading Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun way to maximize the reading potential of our youth and encourage their developmental success. In previous years more than 4,000 students have completed the Summer Reading Challenge and discovered that reading can be fun, exciting and very rewarding.

Each child who successfully participates in the Summer Reading Challenge will receive an invitation to the program’s final ceremony where he or she will be given a certificate of achievement, prizes donated by area businesses and cultural organizations, and entry into a raffle for the chance to win several great prizes. Last year, prizes raffled off included computers, bicycles, video game systems and other electronic equipment, school supplies and many other items.
I encourage you to enroll your child today and wish you and your family a safe, productive, and rewarding summer."

Obama's Speech

Source: White House Press Office

There is nothing I can say that will fill the sudden hole torn in your hearts. But know this: the hopes of a nation are here tonight. We mourn with you for the fallen. We join you in your grief. And we add our faith to yours that Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other living victims of this tragedy pull through. READ MORE...

A “Miracle” In Giffords Hospital Room

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said she was overwhelmed yesterday when she saw her friend, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords open her eyes for the first time since being shot last weekend.

“It was such a moment, and we were in such tears of joy watching this,” Gillibrand told reporters following the memorial service for the victims of the shootout.

Leading up to the event Giffords was squeezing Gillibrand’s hand as the Senator was telling her how inspiring she was to the nation; and how as soon as she got better they would go out for a pizza night. READ MORE...

New York's Crisis

Did You Know?

“New York State has the second highest debt-per-capita in the country…$60 billion in debt. Only $3 billion of this was general obligation debt and approved by voters. The other $57 billion was taken on by public authorities, which means it was not subject to voter approval.” READ MORE...

Paladino Under Fire, Again

This is getting a bit redundant but Carl Paladino has made headlines again, this time for arguing with a editor of NY Post. The whole thing was on video and circulated rapidly across the internet. Paladino was upset and rightly so at the NY Post for sending photographers to take pictures of Paladino's 10 year old daughter. Now, in my opinion that is just crossing the line, and Paladino's response was not that out of line, when you think about it. READ MORE...
