Kleinhans Music Hall

The distinguished, historic Kleinhans Music Hall opened in 1940 and has become one our community has cherished through the years. Kleinhans is shaped like a violin or cello with the two lobes of the instrument housing the concert auditoriums inside. Kleinhans was designed by Eliel Saarinen with his son, Eero Saarinen and is widely held as one of the greatest and most recognized concert halls in the world. The beautiful landmark of downtown, Buffalo was also declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989. The hall has brought to Buffalo some of the world’s most noted musicians, speakers, religious and social leaders including the late great Dr. Martin Luther King who visited Kleinhan's and delivered a speech title "The Future of Integration" to about 2,500 attendees and uttered his would be famous line, "We are moving toward the day when we will judge a man by his character and ability instead of by the color of his skin."
Kleinhans is considered part of the International style-- a major architectural style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s— the formative decades of Modernist architecture.
