The City of Good Neighboors, Does Good Again

There is a reason Buffalo is called The City of Good Neighbors. We may not be the most prosperous or economically booming city, but local citizens and business alike know how to give back to the community when a good cause is involved. That is one of the best parts of living in a city where the six degrees of separation becomes 2 or 3 degrees, one of the benefits of a small city with a big heart. On November 16, 2010 at 10:00am, in the lobby of The Larkin at Exchange Building, a presentation of gifts was made to the Salvation Army from the generous hearts of the employees and staff of a variety of Western New York businesses. For the past month tenants at The Larkin at Exchange Building and Northpointe Office Complex including Walsh Duffield Insurance, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, and Hammond Manufacturing companies have all worked together to collect non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army.  A special thanks goes out to the individuals from these companies that discreetly delivered frozen turkeys direct to the Salvation Army’s kitchens at 960 Main Street.

The Salvation Army’s truck loaded 19  55 gallon barrels of food items, many grocery store gift cards, and two 30lb frozen turkeys.  These donations will help the people in our community that might not be able to provide nutritious meals and special Holiday meals for their families.  Through the Salvation Army’s Emergency Family Assistance Program groceries are provided to individuals, families and the elderly.  Some of the food donated will be included in the preparation of Thanksgiving meals that we will serve to our ‘family’ on the streets and our guests on Thanksgiving Day.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Salvation Army will hold a Special Worship Service in the Chapel at 960 Main Street, at 11:30am.  Then we will serve a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner starting at noon.

Since 1884, The Salvation Army has been a vital link within Western New York’s human services network.  The mission of The Salvation Army- Buffalo Area Services is to offer hope for a better life by meeting basic human needs.
