Film Making: Getting Buffalo On The Map

By Cathi Lanski

Western New York is a treasure trove of unique architecture. This is no secret to anyone who lives here. Increasingly, Buffalo is attracting the attention of Hollywood Producers who are smitten by the Queen City's unique assets.

"Henry's Crime," a comedy produced by Keanu Reeves, starring Reeves and Buffalo filmmaking veteran James Caan is the latest example of Buffalo's irresistible charm—released in April of this year. Reeves spent part of his childhood in nearby Ontario and was familiar with Buffalo. Caan's 1980 directorial debut, "Hide in Plain Sight" also filmed in Buffalo.  Writer Sasha Gervasi's script is set in Buffalo, so shooting the movie here was a natural choice. READ MORE...

Nick Kish

Nick Kish serves at Renovation Church—an innovative community  of Christians making a difference on Buffalo’s West Side. We caught up with him recently to chat about music and faith.

As a musician what inspires you?

There are so many things that inspire me everyday. Being a worship leader at a church I am just blown away at how God uses little me to help point people to the greatness of who He is. As a songwriter I try to capture peoples grace stories and figure out how to write songs through their perspective giving a voice to what’s stirring in their hearts.

What projects are you working on now?

I am currently in the writing process working towards producing a personal album this upcoming year as well as a collaborative band album. READ MORE...

The Grammy award-winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 75th Anniversary Season in 2010-2011 and recently released their summer concert schedule. Since 1940, the Orchestra's permanent home has been Kleinhans Music Hall, a National Historic Site with an international reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the United States.   As Buffalo's cultural ambassador, the BPO has toured widely across the United States and Canada including the recently completed Florida Friends Tour with JoAnn Falletta in March 2010, the first multi-city tour since the 1988 European tour and the first outside of the WNY area since Maestro Falletta led the ensemble at Carnegie Hall in 2004. Other concerts include appearances in the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Boston's Symphony Hall, San Francisco's Davies Hall, Montreal's Place des Arts, and 22 appearances at Carnegie Hall.   Currently, the Orchestra presents more than 120 Classics, Pops and Youth Concerts each year and the award winning BPO Education programs reach over 35,000 students per year (K-12) from all eight counties of Western New York. Inside the Minds of Free Henry!

By Erica Eichlekraut

When I first moved back to Buffalo in 2008, I was anxious to re-learn the creative ‘scene’ here. I visited local galleries, went to festivals and shows, and found a favorite hidden gem at WBFO’s Wednesday Night Concert Series. During my first visit, I was introduced to a band named Free Henry!, comprised of a group of twenty-something guys who clearly loved their music as they smiled while they played, often closing their eyes, getting lost in their sound. It was the perfect blend of shake-your-head rock and tap-your-toes jazz, and in a different venue, most certainly a move-your-hips kind of groove. READ MORE...
