Cover Story: Architecture We Love

One of Buffalo’s most notable and celebrated assets—architecture has played a significant role in both the development of the city and its reinvention. In its heyday the city boasted some of the greatest names in architecture design and produced stunning portrayals of detail and artisanship in the creation of our skyline. As Buffalo continues to reinvent itself, new additions to the skyline have been  welcomed and championed by the community and inspired others to do more. Across the city, there are 51 building listed on the historical registry, serving to attract the likes of the National Preservation Conference to host its annual conference in Buffalo this year.  In that honor, here are some of our favorites the Queen City has to offer.

A beautiful building on Delaware Avenue, The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site/Ansley Wilcox House contains a wealth of Western New York history. Built in 1838 the house was designed and built by the United States Army Engineers under the direction of General Winfield Scott for defense of the Niagara Frontier. The house hosted famous visitors including John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, U. S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, Millard Fillmore, William McKinley, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The site is of course also the inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt as the 26th President of the United States after President McKinley was assassinated while addressing the Pan-American Exposition. The site was authorized as a National Historic Site on November 2, 1966.
